Mergenet Medical, Inc. awarded Grant by United States Government
Mergenet Medical, Inc. is excited to announce a grant awarded by the US
Government to help complete the development of its HIGH FLOW THERAPY device
(HFT). Companies that currently market HFT devices include Fisher & Paykel
Healthcare Corporation Limited (NZSX:FPH, ASX:FPH), whose device is
distributed by Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH), Smiths Medical, a part of UK-based Smiths
Group PLC (SMIN.L) and Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX). The HFT provides a
non-invasive method for treating patients, from premature infants to the
elderly, who suffer from mild to moderate respiratory insufficiency. The
amount of the grant is approximately a quarter of a million dollars.
“One of the innovative features of our patent pending system is the HFT's
ability to monitor airway pressure during treatment, a feature not available
in current competing devices on the market.” This is according to Dr. Charles
Lewis, a contributor in the development of Mergenet Medical, Inc.'s
technology.
HFT therapy helps avoid patient intubation, supports early weaning from
mechanical ventilation and lowers the risk of VAP (ventilator associated
pneumonia). Mergenet Medical, Inc.'s HFT systems' respiratory display
and safety alarms help adapt HFT to hospitalized patients who require close
monitoring, as well as for use in less intensive settings such as Long Term
Acute Care and in skilled nursing facilities. Consequently HFT may allow for
earlier hospital discharge which in turn can greatly reduce healthcare
costs.
Mergenet Medical, Inc. also believes its system will eventually be useful in
the treatment of sleep apnea. It may also be especially suited for children
because it does not require a face sealing mask.
